Argentina's North: Salta la linda

The Argentine North

It’s refreshing to spend some time in the north of Argentina, an area that differs culturally and geographically from the rest of the giant country. For a country that’s obsessed with its European heritage, it’s nice to experience the part of the country that prides itself on indigenous blood and to see its rich history.

9 de Julio Plaza

We’ve had a fabulous week hanging out in Salta, Argentina. The city is one of the bigger ones in the area, but has a certain small-town charm that we feel being so close to the main plaza.

The days here are sunny and pleasant, the people mellow and kind. The 9 de Julio plaza is one of the most beautiful I’ve seen, surrounded by ornate colonial buildings and cobblestone streets lined with orange trees, whose fruits are now ripening. Unlike the chaotic plazas of other cities, walking along the red sandy paths into the shady walkways that snake through the plaza, there is the sense of what the plaza was intended to be: a place to relax, to meet friends, and to enjoy yourself.
