No Bailaras en San Telmo (No Dancing)

Here’s a little bit of street citizen journalism for you from San Telmo. We now have an apartment in this fine neighborhood, famous as the funky “Bohemian” neighborhood on the edge of downtown and Puerto Madero (the yuppy downtown).

As we walk around the streets of San Telmo I’ve seen some stencil-spray-painted signs on buildings saying “No Bailaras” meaning “No Dancing” which seemed really weird to me.

Last night as we walked home we heard a big drum line and when we turned the corner onto the street we saw an informal procession with a man at the front holding a flag, 4 women dancing what looked like the samba, and then 20 drummers behind them. Behind that were some frustrated drivers. Of course right across the street from us I noticed one of the signs saying “no bailaras”. I can only guess this is what the sign is all about.

Also, I really like the style of the stencil they used. The little detail on the N of the No is so pretty which is great. Dancing in the street may not be everyone’s favorite thing, but a nasty sign is even worse. This solves that problem, at least somewhat.
