The rule of "No Hay"

In their book "In the Garlic" we read about the rule of "Falta Uno" the situation when dealing with the burrocracia that you will always be missing just one necessary document to finish whatever business you hope to finish. And so we now have the Knaddison Korollary to the rule of Falta Uno which is the Rule of "No Hay" - that whenever your order reaches a non-trivial level the restaurant will be out of at least one item you've requested.

Since arriving in Argentina we've found this rule to be a consistent experience at bars and restaurants. When we first walk in and read the menu we are often amazed at the selection of food and wine. Delicious items tempt us and we finally decide on what we want. And yet, consistently there is something missing. "No hay tomates" "No hay camarones" "No hay lomo". Tomatos, seafood, and steak? How can they be out of steak in this country?


Ha,ha,ha. So true, so true. I've been to Buenos Aires twice in the last two years and can totally relate to this post. Very funny!! I think the problem is is that a lot of bars and restaurants haven't bothered to update their menus, (i.e. remove from the menu items they no longer wish to offer).
