Cirque du soleil meets Tango: Aerial dance in Argentina

Greg and I went to an event last weekend at the Teatro Metropolitan in Buenos Aires on Corrientes. I asked my friend who invited us what kind of dance it was and she said, "aerial dance (danza aerea)", as if it were a commonly recognized genre, like ballet or flamenco (although according to wikipedia, it is a commonly recognized and apparently has a yearly festival in our own backyard: Boulder, CO...but how am I to know these things?). Aerial dance has been big in Argentina for the past decade, and the group we saw "Air Condition", has been around since 1994. The show was amazing: it included about 15 different dance scenes, with very different music, choreography, and styles. My favorites included a hip hop dancer dancing perpendicular to the audience on the back wall and, of course, a tango interpretation with the woman attached to a flexible chord who did crazy tricks with her partner, like jumping up on his shoulder and dancing sideways where both bodies were practically touching the ground. The show was definitely worth seeing!

The name is Brenda Angiel Aerial Dance Company ,
for me they are the best aerial performers in the world.
