10 things to do in Buenos Aires
There are an infinite number of thing to do in Buenos Aires, day or night, but here are a few of my favorites.
- Take a taxi ride down Corrientes at night past 12 lane road Nueve de Julio, where you will get a great night view of the obelisk monument and will definitely feel cool that you are in Buenos Aires.
- Go to a milonga. A great way to see that tango dancing is alive and well, a visit to a milonga is an opportunity to watch people of all levels practice their craft. It's amazing to see the different styles and interpretations, and to observe the tango network and its social mores at work. Often times there will be a performance of professional or semi-professional dancers at some point in the evening. Note: if you haven't gotten used to a porteño schedule yet, drink some late-afternoon coffee, as earlybirds arrive at midnight. We left at 3am on a Monday night and were considered party poopers.
- Shop on Santa Fe There is great shopping all over Buenos Aires, but the largest concentration of shops is along Santa Fe, where you can get anything you might need, and of course things you don't need. Stop at the Libreria Ateo near Callao to see a great selection of books in a beautifully-converted theater.
- Head to the MALBA. The Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires is a fantastic private collection of Latin American art displayed in a great building in Palermo Chico.
- Eat a steak. Duh. For a traditional steakhouse in a historic neighborhood, head to La Brigada on Estados Unidos in San Telmo. For a steak with an Italian twist in a nice atmosphere, try Recoleta's Sette Bacco.
- Coffee break. Buenos Aires is full of traditional bars, more common for grabbing an espresso than a beer. Have a coffee or hot chocolate at famous Cafe Torotoni or one of the other top 10 Buenos Aires bars.
- Sunday in San Telmo. Cliché though it may be, checking out the Sunday antique market in San Telmo is a great way to pass the afternoon. There are a few photographers displaying their art that are worth checking out.
- Ride the Subte A line, the oldest subway line in Latin America.
- Visit the Recoleta cemetery to see where Argentina's rich and famous spend their afterlife.
- Wander. Andar. The best way to see this great city is to walk around, get lost, and stop at places that are interesting to you.
Looks like you enjoyed BA. Your #10 is my favorite! I've been wandering this city for 3 years and still finding something new everyday.
For older & sensible
if you wander around beware of getting lost in nasty places ... especially at night
also very unusual is a "safari" through the parks of Palermo, if you know what i mean
Thank you so much for the tips. It's great to get some insider knowledge rather than going completely off the recommendations of guide books and tourist information.
Great tips. Thanks a lot. These are really useful trips. I hope it will work. Will be waiting for the new ones.
